Poker online: player-vs-player poker and casino poker

Poker online is really two products that share a deck and a set of hand rankings. In a poker room you sit with other players, and the money you win comes out of their stacks. The site charges a fee called rake from each pot or tournament entry. In casino poker you play against the house instead: the game has fixed payouts, and the casino’s edge is built into the rules.

In room poker your skill relative to the table decides the long-run result, so studying position and pot odds pays off. In casino poker, good decisions reduce the house edge but cannot remove it. Know which one you have opened before you deposit.

For Irish players the practical checks are the same either way: who runs the site, how euro deposits and withdrawals work, and whether tables at your stakes are busy when you play. We cover those in our ranking of the best poker sites; this page covers the hands, the rules and the formats.

Poker hand rankings: poker hands in order from best to worst

Every poker game that uses standard high hands ranks them the same way. You make the best five-card hand you can, and a higher category always beats a lower one: any flush beats any straight, and any full house beats any flush. Suits do not rank against each other in Texas Hold’em or Omaha, so identical hands in different suits split the pot. Rarer hands rank higher, and the table of poker hands ranked below doubles as a poker cheat sheet.

Poker online: classic slot lever and gold coins in the air

Three rules settle most arguments. Only five cards count: in Hold’em you use any five of your two hole cards and the five community cards, even if that means playing the board. The kicker breaks ties, so A-K beats A-Q when both players pair the ace. And the ace plays high or low in a straight but cannot wrap round, so Q-K-A-2-3 is not a straight.

Full houses trip up newer players. If the board reads K-K-7-Q-2 and you hold 7-7, you have sevens full of kings; an opponent with K-Q has kings full of queens and wins, because the three-card part is compared first.

How to play poker: Texas Hold’em rules step by step

Texas Hold’em is the game most poker sites open with, and the one you will meet at a home game in Cork or a card room in Dublin. Each player gets two private hole cards, five community cards are dealt face up, and there are four betting rounds. The rules fit on a page; the strategy takes years.

Poker rules also depend on the betting structure. In no-limit you can bet all your chips at any moment; in pot-limit the largest bet is the size of the pot; in fixed-limit bets come in set amounts. Omaha uses the same flop, turn and river, but you get four hole cards and must use exactly two of them with three from the board.

Position is the rule beginners underrate: acting last after the flop means you see what everyone else does before you decide. Playing on a phone? Our mobile casino guide covers app and browser set-up.

  1. Post the blindsThe two players left of the button post forced bets, the small and big blinds, so every hand has something to win; the button moves one seat left each hand.
  2. Deal hole cards and bet pre-flopEveryone receives two cards face down. Starting left of the big blind, each player folds, calls or raises.
  3. The flopThree community cards are dealt face up. Betting now starts with the first active player left of the button, and you may check if nobody has bet.
  4. The turnA fourth community card arrives, then another betting round. In fixed-limit games the bet size usually doubles here.
  5. The riverThe fifth community card is dealt, then the final round of betting.
  6. ShowdownRemaining players show their cards and the best five-card hand takes the pot. If everyone else folds earlier, the last player in wins without showing.

Poker terms: a cheat sheet for your first sessions

Chat boxes, tournament lobbies and hand histories assume you know these poker terms.

  • Button: the dealer position; it acts last after the flop and is the most profitable seat.
  • Check, call, raise, fold: pass without betting, match a bet, increase it, or give up the hand.
  • Kicker: the highest side card, which breaks a tie between equal pairs or trips.
  • Outs: unseen cards that would turn your hand into the likely winner.
  • Pot odds: the price of a call compared with what is already in the pot.
  • Rake: the fee the site takes from cash-game pots; in tournaments it is added to the buy-in.
  • Freeroll: a tournament with no entry fee and a real prize pool.
  • Satellite: a cheaper tournament that awards seats in a bigger one.
  • Tilt: playing worse because you are frustrated or chasing losses.

Cash games vs tournaments: choosing your poker format

Cash games and tournaments share hand rankings and betting rounds, but they feel like different games. In a cash game the chips are real money: a €20 stack is €20, you join or leave whenever you like, and the blinds stay fixed. In a poker tourney you pay a buy-in, receive tournament chips, and play until you bust or finish in the prizes, while the blinds rise on a timer.

Ten euro note, a smartphone and chips

Tournaments offer a large prize for a small entry, which is why they draw recreational players; the price is variance and time, since a multi-table event can run for hours. Sit & Go games start once enough players register and finish sooner.

Online casino poker: Caribbean Stud, Casino Hold’em and video poker

Online casino poker swaps the other players for the dealer. In Caribbean Stud you place an ante, receive five cards, and either fold or raise; the dealer must qualify with a minimum hand before your raise is paid, and strong hands earn bonus payouts from a pay table. Casino Hold’em works the same way with two hole cards and a shared board. You cannot bluff the dealer, so the only decision is whether your hand is worth the extra bet.

Video poker is closer to a slot with a strategy chart. You are dealt five cards, choose which to hold, and draw once; the final hand is paid from the table on screen. Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild are the common versions. Check the pay table first: a machine that pays more for a full house and a flush returns more than the same game with a cut table.

Pai gow poker adds a joker to the deck; you split seven cards into a five-card and a two-card hand, both must beat the dealer’s, and many rounds push. Live lobbies also run poker tables with a real dealer; our live casino guide explains those streams. If you enjoy beating a dealer rather than a table, blackjack online and baccarat online follow the same idea.

Poker odds, pot odds and how to bluff effectively in poker

A poker odds calculator takes your cards, the board and an opponent’s likely range and shows how often each hand wins. At the table, count your outs, the unseen cards that complete your hand: holding four hearts on the turn, nine hearts remain among the 46 cards you have not seen, so you hit on the river a little under one time in five.

Cosy Irish sitting room with a turf fire, a laptop with a casino game and rain on the window

Now compare that with the price. If the pot holds €40 and your opponent bets €10, you call €10 to win €50, so the call pays over time if you win more than one time in six. One in five beats one in six, so calling is correct.

Bluffing works when the story makes sense. If you raised before the flop and the board comes A-K-5, a bet represents a hand you could easily hold. Bluff one or two opponents rather than five, pick players who can fold, and prefer semi-bluffs, bets with a draw that can still win if called. Against players who never fold, bet strong hands for value and keep the bluffs for tougher tables.

Free poker online and poker for real money in Ireland

Free poker comes in a few forms. Play-money tables teach the software, but nobody risks anything, so players call far too often. Freerolls have real prizes, so people play seriously, and demo video poker teaches hold decisions at no cost.

For online poker real money, the legal picture in 2026 matters. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland was set up in March 2025 and began issuing remote betting licences from 1 July 2026. Applications for other licences, including gaming, open throughout 2027 and 2028. Offshore sites such as 22BET operate without a GRAI licence, so read the operator’s terms before you deposit. Revenue states that gains from betting are not subject to capital gains tax; if poker is your main income, ask Revenue or a tax adviser.

If you play poker online in Ireland for money, use a site with deposit limits, pay with a debit card or e-wallet in your own name, and set a session budget first. Our casino payment methods guide compares deposit options, real money casino covers the cashier checks, and welcome bonus explains how deposit offers are released. If poker stops being fun, our responsible gambling page lists Irish support lines.

Frequently asked questions

What are the poker hands in order?

From highest to lowest: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair and high card. Ties go to the highest cards or kickers.

Does a flush beat a straight?

Yes. A flush beats a straight, and a full house beats both. When two players hold flushes, the highest card in each flush decides.

How can I play poker online free?

Use play-money tables to learn the software, enter freerolls for real prizes without an entry fee, or try video poker in demo mode. Play chips and demo credits cannot be cashed out.

Is online poker legal in Ireland?

GRAI began issuing remote betting licences on 1 July 2026, while applications for gaming licences, which cover casino-style games, open throughout 2027 and 2028. Until then no online casino holds a GRAI gaming licence.

What is the difference between video poker and poker?

Video poker is a single-player game against a machine: you hold and draw once, and the pay table sets your win. Room poker is played against other people, whose chips you win with better hands or well-timed bets.

Is there an online poker bonus for Irish players?

Poker rooms often release bonuses step by step as you pay rake, while casinos usually match a deposit with wagering rules. 22BET offers +250% on your deposit; check the bonus terms on the 22BET site to see which games count.

Do I pay tax on poker winnings in Ireland?

Revenue states that you do not pay capital gains tax on gains from betting. If poker is your main income, ask Revenue or a tax adviser whether different rules apply.

How long does an online poker tournament take?

It depends on the field size and how fast the blinds rise. A one-table Sit & Go finishes much sooner than a large multi-table event, so check the blind structure in the lobby before you register.
